Caring for children and caring for your marriage are not competing priorities. They are deeply connected.
Babies are born with most of the brain cells they will ever need. What is still developing are the connections (synapses) between those cells. Every time you talk, cuddle, sing, smile, make eye contact, or respond to your baby's needs, you are helping build those important neural pathways.
Your baby is learning far more than words and skills.
Through your touch, voice, eye contact, and responsiveness, your baby is learning what love feels like. They are learning trust, security, and connection.
Dr. Amen, author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, observed:
"Physical connection is a critical element of the parent-bonding process. The caressing, kissing, sweet words and eye contact from the baby's mother and father give it the pleasure, love, trust and security it needs to develop healthy limbic pathways... that need never go away at any age."
The need for loving connection doesn't disappear when we become adults.
The same affection, encouragement, eye contact, kind words, and meaningful conversations that help children flourish continue to strengthen our closest adult relationships as well.
I didn't fully understand how connected those relationships were until one unexpected morning at our breakfast table.
One morning my husband and I were sitting at the breakfast table with our first two little ones—Rachel, age three, and Sarah, about eighteen months old.
We were having an intense discussion about something, probably bills, when Rachel suddenly stood up in her chair, planted her little fists firmly on the table, leaned forward, and shouted:
"Stop yelling at each other!"
I was stunned.
I would not have described our conversation as yelling.
But how could I deny the observation of my three-year-old?
Whatever I called it, she was experiencing tension between her parents.
As lovely as the dream of being married and having little ones bless our lives was, there was a whole lot I didn't understand about nurturing both my relationship with my husband and my relationship with my children at the same time!
I wish I had understood that more clearly as a new mother.
Caring for children and caring for your marriage are not competing priorities. They are deeply connected.
Children notice more than we think.
Babies may not have words for it, but they can feel tension, distance, frustration, and disconnection in the home.
What would your children say about the way you speak to each other?
What would your spouse say?
Parents need intentional time together beyond conversations about bills, schedules, meals, and responsibilities.
We needed time to talk.
To listen.
To laugh.
To reconnect.
Just as children thrive through consistent moments of loving connection, marriages thrive through consistent moments of loving connection too.
That's why the principles behind the 5-Minute Connection Method™ are valuable for the whole family.
A five-minute cuddle with your baby matters.
A five-minute conversation with your spouse matters too.
A kiss before leaving for work. Words of appreciation before bed. Holding hands while talking about your day. Looking into each other's eyes instead of at a screen.
These small moments help keep alive the feelings that brought you together in the first place.
As Jesse Jackson wisely said:
"Your children need your presence more than your presents."
And Fred Rogers reminded us:
"Strengthen a parent and you strengthen a child."
Strong marriages help build strong families.
When children see affection, respect, kindness, and connection between their parents, they are receiving lessons that will shape their own relationships for years to come.
The 5-Minute Connection Method™ isn't only about helping babies build healthy brains.
It's about helping families build healthy relationships.
And those small moments of connection—whether with your baby or your spouse—will be some of the most important minutes of your day.
